Relation between growth and melt shapes of ice crystals

چکیده

Under near-equilibrium growth or melt conditions, ice crystals in the melt are bounded by two parallel facets (basal planes or c-facets) and rounded surfaces between the facets. We observed such disk-shaped ice crystals perpendicularly to the c-axis in two and three dimensions, and found that the growth andmelt shapes are asymmetric. On imposition of a small driving force, a rounded crystal grew to be partially faceted with a loss of vicinal surfaces and a formation of surface-slope discontinuities at the facet edges, and then the partially faceted crystal melted to be rounded with enlarging vicinal surfaces. The rounded surfaces grew with a decreasing curvature and melted with an increasing curvature. & 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

New insights into ice growth and melting modifications by antifreeze proteins

Antifreeze proteins (AFPs) evolved in many organisms, allowing them to survive in cold climates by controlling ice crystal growth. The specific interactions of AFPs with ice determine their potential applications in agriculture, food preservation and medicine. AFPs control the shapes of ice crystals in a manner characteristic of the particular AFP type. Moderately active AFPs cause the formatio...

Growth–melt asymmetry in ice crystals under the influence of spruce budworm antifreeze protein

Here we describe studies of the crystallization behavior of ice in an aqueous solution of spruce budworm antifreeze protein (sbwAFP) at atmospheric pressure. SbwAFP is an ice binding protein with high thermal hysteresis activity, which helps protect Choristoneura fumiferana (spruce budworm) larvae from freezing as they overwinter in the spruce and fir forests of the north eastern United States ...

Growth-melt asymmetry in crystals and twelve-sided snowflakes.

It is in the lexicon of crystal growth that the shape of a growing crystal reflects the underlying microscopic architecture. Although it is known that in weakly nonequilibrium conditions the slowest growing orientations ultimately dominate the asymptotic shape, is the same true for melting? Here we observe and show theoretically that while the two-dimensional steady melt shapes of ice are bound...

Roughening transition of prism faces of ice crystals grown from melt under pressure

By observing the crystal shapes and kinetics of ice Ih growing at high pressures from the melt, it was found that the prism f1 0 1̄ 0g faces undergo a roughening transition at approximately 16 C and 160MPa (1600 bar) in H2O ice, and 14 C and 180MPa (1800 bar) in D2O ice. At temperatures above the roughening transition, the prism facets completely vanished and the curves of growth rate versus gro...

In situ observations of a high-pressure phase of H2O Ice

A previously unknown solid phase of H2O has been identified by its peculiar growth patterns, distinct pressure-temperature melting relations, and vibrational Raman spectra. Morphologies of ice crystals and their pressure-temperature melting relations were directly observed in a hydrothermal diamond-anvil cell for H2O bulk densities between 1203 and 1257 kilograms per cubic meter at temperatures...
